Florida Sparks National Debate with Move to Scrap All Vaccine Mandates

Florida is set to become the first U.S. state to abolish all vaccine mandates, including long-standing immunization requirements for children attending public schools. The announcement was made this week by Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo, with the backing of Governor Ron DeSantis, marking a sharp departure from decades of public health policy.

If enacted, the measure would eliminate mandatory vaccines for diseases such as measles, polio, and chickenpox, which have been required for school entry across the country for generations. Ladapo, framing the move as a matter of “medical freedom,” argued that vaccination should remain a personal choice rather than a government mandate.

“This is about protecting individual rights and parental choice,” Ladapo said, while controversially comparing vaccine mandates to “slavery.”

The proposal has drawn widespread criticism from medical experts and public health organizations. The American Medical Association condemned the plan as an “unprecedented rollback” of protections against infectious diseases. Infectious disease specialists, including Dr. Michael Osterholm and Dr. Tina Tan, warned that ending mandates could lead to outbreaks of preventable illnesses, particularly among vulnerable children.

Despite the push from state officials, Florida’s legislature would need to pass new laws to fully eliminate existing mandates. Health authorities caution that without legal safeguards, communities could see a resurgence of diseases long considered under control.

Public opinion appears largely at odds with the proposal. A recent Kaiser Family Foundation–Washington Post poll found that 82 percent of Florida parents support vaccine requirements for schoolchildren, nearly identical to the national figure.

Florida’s move comes as other states take an opposite path. California, Oregon, and Washington have formed a vaccine alliance to coordinate health policy, while Northeastern states have pledged to strengthen immunization programs. Earlier this year, Idaho repealed most of its school vaccination requirements, but Florida’s plan would go further, wiping out mandates entirely.

As the debate intensifies, the future of school health protections in Florida may hinge on the upcoming legislative session, with national implications for how states balance public health and individual rights.
