DP World Launches New Jebel Ali–Berbera Shipping Route to Boost Gulf–Africa Trade

Global logistics giant DP World has announced the launch of a new direct shipping route connecting Jebel Ali Port in Dubai with Berbera Port in Somaliland, marking a major milestone in strengthening maritime trade links between the Gulf region and East Africa. The new service, which will operate every nine days, aims to enhance connectivity, reduce transit times, and open new trade opportunities for businesses across both regions.

The route will include stops at Aden (Yemen) and Djibouti Port, creating a strategic corridor through the Horn of Africa. From Berbera, the service extends into key inland markets, particularly Ethiopia, providing an alternative trade gateway to the traditionally congested Djibouti corridor. The initiative is expected to significantly improve logistics efficiency for landlocked nations and regional exporters seeking access to Middle Eastern and global markets through Dubai.

The launch builds upon DP World’s continued investments in Berbera, where the company holds a 58.5% stake in the port’s container and general cargo terminal. Over the past few years, Berbera Port has undergone major upgrades, including the development of a deep-water container terminal and an adjacent economic zone, positioning it as a major logistics hub for East Africa.

According to DP World, the new route will enhance supply chain resilience and support the company’s broader goal of developing integrated trade corridors across Africa. The service is expected to attract regional exporters, particularly those dealing in agricultural goods, textiles, and consumer products, by providing a reliable and cost-effective maritime link to the UAE and beyond.

Industry experts see this development as a significant boost to the Gulf–Africa trade relationship, offering new opportunities for investment and regional cooperation. As DP World continues to expand its network of ports and logistics hubs across Africa, the Jebel Ali–Berbera route is set to play a pivotal role in reshaping the continent’s maritime trade landscape and fostering greater economic integration.
