Saudi Crown Prince Heads to Washington as Strategic, Defence and AI Talks Take Centre Stage
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is set to arrive in Washington on Tuesday for a highly anticipated meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, marking his first visit to the United States since 2018. The visit comes at a crucial moment in U.S.–Saudi relations, following Riyadh’s recently announced commitment to invest around $600 billion in the American economy. Although the investment figure has captured global attention, officials and analysts say the talks will focus on a much broader and strategically significant agenda, including defence cooperation, artificial intelligence partnerships and the potential for a civilian nuclear agreement. The Crown Prince is expected to seek enhanced U.S. security assurances amid regional tensions, while also pushing for deeper access to advanced American AI chips, cloud infrastructure and high-technology sectors. These areas are central to Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 economic transformation plan and its ambition to become a major global technology hub.
Ahead of the visit, Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund, reduced its exposure to U.S. equity markets by selling stakes in nine large American companies, a move viewed as part of its strategy to reallocate capital toward major domestic projects such as Neom and preparations for hosting the 2034 FIFA World Cup. Despite the divestments, the fund maintains significant positions in several U.S. firms, and the timing of the portfolio shift has drawn increased attention as the White House meeting approaches. Meanwhile, the U.S. administration is expected to push Saudi Arabia to advance a possible normalisation agreement with Israel under the Abraham Accords framework. However, officials acknowledge that progress will be difficult, as Riyadh continues to insist on a credible pathway to a Palestinian state—an expectation that Israel’s leadership strongly resists.
The visit is widely seen as a pivotal moment for reshaping the future of U.S.–Saudi relations. For Washington, it offers an opportunity to anchor new defence, economic and technological agreements that could strengthen America’s position in the Middle East. For Riyadh, the trip provides a platform to secure long-term strategic guarantees, expand investment frameworks and reinforce the kingdom’s global influence. Despite underlying political sensitivities, both sides recognise the strategic value of deeper cooperation, making Tuesday’s meeting one of the most significant diplomatic events in recent years.
