Meta Partners with Overview Energy to Harness Space-Based Solar Power for AI Data Centers

Meta Platforms has announced a landmark partnership with space energy startup Overview Energy to secure large-scale clean electricity for its growing network of AI-driven data centers. The collaboration marks one of the most ambitious moves yet by a major technology company to explore space-based solar power as a long-term energy solution.

Under the agreement, Meta is expected to gain access to up to 1 gigawatt of orbital solar power capacity, which will be generated by satellites collecting solar energy in space and transmitting it back to Earth. This energy is then converted into electricity to support high-demand computing infrastructure. The initiative is designed to provide a continuous, 24/7 renewable power supply, helping overcome the limitations of weather-dependent and land-based renewable sources.

The project outlines an initial demonstration mission targeted for 2028, with plans for commercial-scale deployment beginning around 2030. Once operational, it could significantly reduce pressure on terrestrial power grids, which are increasingly strained by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence workloads and data center construction.

Meta stated that the partnership aligns with its broader strategy to secure reliable and sustainable energy sources for the future of computing. The company has been actively investing in a mix of solar, nuclear, and advanced grid technologies to meet its long-term carbon reduction and energy stability goals.

Industry experts view the collaboration as a bold step toward redefining how large-scale digital infrastructure is powered. If successful, the initiative could open a new frontier in clean energy generation, positioning space-based solar power as a viable contributor to the global energy mix for the first time.
