Unidentified Strike Sparks Fire at AWS UAE Data Center Amid Escalating Middle East Conflict

One of the Middle East data centers operated by Amazon Web Services (AWS) in the United Arab Emirates caught fire after being struck by unidentified “objects” amid heightened regional tensions, the company confirmed.

In a statement, AWS — the cloud computing arm of Amazon — said the incident affected one of its facilities within the Middle East (UAE) Region, known as ME-CENTRAL-1. The impact reportedly caused sparks that ignited a localized fire inside the data center infrastructure. Emergency response teams were immediately deployed to the site, and power to the affected section, including backup generators, was shut down as a precautionary measure while crews worked to contain the blaze.

The company said one Availability Zone within the region was taken offline as a result of the incident. Customers relying on services hosted in that specific zone experienced temporary disruptions, though other availability zones in the region continued operating normally. AWS engineers initiated failover protocols and rerouted traffic where possible to minimize service interruptions.

While the company confirmed that the facility had been hit by “objects,” it did not specify their nature or origin. Officials have not formally linked the incident to ongoing military exchanges in the broader Middle East, where missile and drone activity has intensified in recent days. Authorities in the UAE have not released additional details regarding the source of the strike or any potential security implications.

No injuries were reported, according to preliminary statements. AWS indicated that restoration efforts were underway and that it expected connectivity and full service functionality to be gradually reinstated once safety inspections and system checks were completed.

The incident highlights growing concerns over the vulnerability of critical digital infrastructure during periods of geopolitical instability. Data centers host essential cloud services for governments, financial institutions, healthcare providers, and multinational corporations. Any disruption — even if geographically contained — can have ripple effects across sectors that rely on continuous uptime and data accessibility.

Industry analysts noted that modern cloud architecture is designed with redundancy across multiple availability zones and regions to prevent widespread outages. However, the event underscores the importance for organizations to distribute workloads across different geographic regions to mitigate risks arising from localized disruptions.

Further investigations are expected as authorities assess the cause of the impact and evaluate any potential security or defensive measures required to safeguard strategic infrastructure in the region.
