Huawei Unveils Mate 90 Series smartphones with Focus on Homegrown Technology

Huawei has launched its new Mate 90 smartphone series, highlighting advances in its domestic chip technology as the company continues to strengthen its technology ecosystem amid ongoing US trade restrictions. The new flagship lineup underlines Huawei’s efforts to develop key hardware and software capabilities within China.

At the heart of the premium models is Huawei’s new Kirin 9050 Pro processor, which uses an innovative chip-design technique aimed at improving computing efficiency and performance. The approach allows Huawei to make better use of available semiconductor manufacturing capabilities while addressing some of the challenges created by limits on access to advanced chipmaking technologies.

The company has not disclosed the manufacturer of the new processor. However, China’s semiconductor industry has been closely involved in Huawei’s efforts to advance domestic chip production. Huawei’s continued development of its Kirin platform demonstrates the company’s focus on reducing reliance on overseas semiconductor technologies.

The Mate 90 series also features Huawei’s HarmonyOS 7, further expanding the company’s move toward an independent software environment. Huawei said the operating system now supports more than 450,000 applications and services, giving users a broader range of locally developed software and digital services.

The new smartphones arrive at a time when manufacturers are facing rising component expenses, particularly for memory. Huawei has acknowledged the impact of higher memory costs on smartphone production, with the increased expenses reflected in the pricing of some premium models. The Mate 90 starts at 5,999 yuan, while the Mate 90 Pro begins at 6,999 yuan. The Mate 90 Pro Max with 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage is priced at 9,999 yuan.

Huawei’s domestic smartphone business has also shown resilience despite a broader slowdown in China’s handset market. Industry data indicates that smartphone shipments in China fell during the first eight months of the year, while Huawei recorded growth over the same period. The company has also maintained a strong presence in the country’s expanding foldable smartphone segment.

With the Mate 90 series, Huawei is continuing to combine its own processors, software platform and chip-design innovations into a more self-reliant technology ecosystem. The launch highlights the company’s determination to maintain its position in the premium smartphone market while developing alternatives to technologies affected by international trade restrictions.
