Sri Lanka’s Economic Comeback Strengthens as World Bank Upgrades Nation to Upper-Middle-Income Status

Sri Lanka has received a significant boost to its economic outlook after the World Bank upgraded the country to an upper-middle-income economy, marking a strong signal of recovery and renewed stability following years of economic turbulence.

The classification change comes after Sri Lanka recorded a notable rebound in economic activity, supported by improvements in tourism, services, and financial sector performance. The economy is estimated to have grown by around 5% in 2025, reflecting steady progress in rebuilding momentum after the severe downturn experienced during the 2022 financial crisis.

The upgrade is based on the World Bank’s Gross National Income (GNI) per capita threshold system, which is reviewed annually. Sri Lanka’s improved income levels indicate that the country has now crossed the benchmark required to move out of the lower-middle-income category, reflecting rising national income and gradual economic normalization.

In recent years, Sri Lanka has undertaken major economic reforms under an IMF-supported stabilization programme, helping to control inflation, strengthen foreign reserves, and restore investor confidence. These measures have played a key role in supporting the country’s return to growth and improving overall macroeconomic stability.

The World Bank’s revision also places Sri Lanka alongside several other emerging economies that have moved up in classification this year, including Viet Nam and the Philippines. The development is being seen as a positive indicator of broader regional economic resilience and post-pandemic recovery.

Economists note that while the upgrade reflects encouraging progress, continued efforts will be needed to ensure sustainable long-term growth, particularly in managing public debt and attracting investment. Overall, the reclassification is being viewed as a confidence-boosting milestone, highlighting Sri Lanka’s steady path toward economic recovery and stronger global standing.
