Google Explores Chinese Suppliers for Data Centre Cooling Amid AI Boom
Google is in advanced discussions with Chinese cooling solutions provider Envicool and other manufacturers to procure specialized data centre cooling systems, according to sources familiar with the matter. The move reflects the growing urgency among global technology firms to secure critical infrastructure components as demand for artificial intelligence (AI) computing continues to surge.
The discussions reportedly gained momentum following a recent visit by Google’s procurement team based in Taiwan to China, where meetings were held with multiple suppliers. These engagements highlight how even large-scale tech companies are increasingly facing supply constraints—not only in semiconductors but also in supporting technologies such as cooling systems, which are essential for maintaining the performance and longevity of high-density AI servers.
As AI workloads expand rapidly, traditional air-cooling methods are becoming inadequate for modern data centres. Advanced liquid cooling technologies, which use fluids to dissipate heat more efficiently, are emerging as the preferred solution for hyperscale facilities. The talks also underscore the growing role of Chinese manufacturers in the global data centre supply chain.
