German energy major RWE has signed a landmark agreement with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) to explore long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies to Germany and other European markets. The deal was formalized during German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s official visit to the United Arab Emirates, highlighting deepening energy and economic ties between the two nations.
Under the framework agreement, RWE and ADNOC plan to study the feasibility of importing up to 1 million tonnes of LNG annually over the next decade, a move aimed at diversifying Germany’s gas supply amid reduced dependence on traditional sources.
In parallel, RWE signed a separate memorandum of understanding with UAE renewable energy company Masdar to jointly explore battery energy storage projects in Germany, potentially adding up to 2 gigawatts of capacity by 2035. These storage systems are expected to help integrate renewable energy and stabilize the power grid.
Chancellor Merz, visiting Abu Dhabi as part of a Gulf tour including Saudi Arabia and Qatar, met with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation across energy, technology, and industrial sectors.
“The agreements with ADNOC and Masdar demonstrate Germany’s commitment to energy diversification and security,” Merz said during a press briefing, emphasizing the strategic importance of balancing short-term energy needs with the country’s long-term green transition goals.
The deals come as Europe continues to reduce reliance on singular suppliers and secure stable energy flows, with LNG imports and renewable investments forming a critical part of the continent’s post-2022 energy strategy.
